The Price of Pinterest: When the Dream Wedding Meets the Reality of the Budget

I've seen this happen countless times. You have that carefully curated Pinterest board, filled with meticulously selected details you've been saving since you were 15 years old, packed with inspiration for your dream wedding. Then comes the surprise when you start requesting quotes for the décor and discover that the Twilight-worthy setup you've been dreaming about costs around US$9,000 more than you actually have available in your budget.

Or perhaps it is that beautiful bouquet you imagined carrying down the aisle, only to discover that it is made with European flowers that are completely out of season. Or that incredible dress you found online and swore you would get married in. I know the disappointment that comes with finding out it was a Carlos Bacchi design.
I do not even want to imagine what will happen once Taylor Swift's wedding is revealed and brides start requesting an identical flower garden setting for no more than US$3,600.
I know that getting married is not always easy, regardless of the budget you have. Even if you have US$180,000 to spend on your wedding, it is still a budget of US$180,000, not two or three times that amount.
The financial stress many couples experience during the planning process often comes much more from a lack of information than from poor organization or even a lack of resources. Because so much of this industry still operates behind closed doors, you only begin to understand the true cost of your dream once you start speaking with the suppliers you have chosen.
On average, to host a traditional wedding with everything that comes with it, maintaining excellent quality and without having to limit your options too heavily, you should expect to invest around US$18,000. I repeat: on average, okay? There are cities and regions where this figure can be higher or lower.

I know this stage of your life can be complicated, a mix of excitement and worry. So, my advice as a friend is this: start by creating a guest list and setting an initial budget.
Do not book the venue yet.
Even if you know how to read contracts, you may not yet know how to evaluate whether that venue is truly the best fit for what you envision for your big day. Trust me on this one.
Once you have defined those two points, start looking into hiring a wedding planner. A good planner will show you how much of your dream can realistically be achieved within your available budget, allowing you to prepare emotionally for the decisions that lie ahead.
Create a list of "desired luxuries" as well. These are non-essential items such as a photo booth, a second dress for the reception, a coffee bar, or any other extra detail that you and your fiancé or fiancée would love to include.
You never know when one of you might receive a promotion at work or when that generous aunt decides to gift you one of your wedding vendors.
Remember that this day is a celebration of love and commitment between the two of you.
Of course, offering gelato during the reception is wonderful, but it is even better to get married feeling happy, free from stress, debt, and endless arguments with your partner about what it took to make this dream come true.
Believe me: wedding miracles are real, and they will happen for you too.
