That the luxury market needs to reinvent itself is nothing new — but imagine wearing an accessory made from "leather" derived from a Tyrannosaurus Rex! As unbelievable as it sounds, this sci-fi-worthy concept is on the verge of becoming reality.

British company Lab Grown Leather, a specialist in lab-cultivated fabrics, has announced the creation of the world’s first leather made from T-Rex DNA — and plans to launch luxury products using this groundbreaking material later this year.

The project is the result of a partnership with The Organoid Company, a genomics specialist. Together, the companies are developing a sustainable, animal-free material designed to replace traditional leather. The technique used, known as Elemental X™, allows scientists to synthesize fossilized Tyrannosaurus DNA and create a fabric that mimics the structure and appearance of the dinosaur’s hide.

“By reconstructing and enhancing ancient protein sequences, we’ve engineered and cloned T-Rex leather — a biomaterial inspired by prehistoric biology,” explained Thomas Mitchell, CEO of The Organoid Company.

The plan is to launch the first product — likely a luxury handbag — by the end of 2025. And it doesn’t stop there: following its debut in fashion, the companies aim to expand the material’s use into the automotive industry.

In addition to its sci-fi appeal, T-Rex leather is promised to be fully biodegradable, while retaining the durability, reparability, and sophisticated look of conventional leather. More than a scientific curiosity, the initiative represents a forward-thinking option for luxury consumers seeking environmentally conscious products.

“We believe future generations will demand more innovation and responsibility. That’s why we’re offering a material that is sustainable, cruelty-free, and fully traceable,” Lab Grown Leather emphasized in an official statement.

So… would you carry a T-Rex handbag? I know I can’t wait for mine (laughs).
